A one-person business: skills, AI and a systematic start. Nordheim Company Launch System

The number of US businesses without paid employees grew by 5.1% in a year. What does starting on your own involve, and how can Nordheim’s Company Launch System and AI prompt packs help?

An entrepreneur packs an order in a small workspace.

In my previous post, I wrote about layoffs and how AI can help you prepare for your next job. One possible next step is to put your skills to work in your own business. This is a growing trend that developed alongside the increasing role of gig work in the economy. The gig economy, also referred to as the platform or sharing economy, is an economic model in which short assignments, projects or individual tasks take the place of conventional long-term employment relationships.

At Nordheim, we help people turn their skills into a clear service and build the systems needed to run a business. We offer the Company Launch System for this, alongside AI prompt packs for people who want to get started independently. First, though, what does the growth of one-person businesses actually mean?

What do the growth figures show?

The US Census Bureau’s 2024 dataset recorded 31.99 million businesses without paid employees. The agency reports 30.43 million for 2023. Based on these figures, the number rose by approximately 1.56 million businesses, or 5.1%, in a year. The 2024 data was released on 29 September 2026.

This group covers businesses with economic activity but no paid employees. Some have multiple owners. Businesses without paid employees and one-person businesses therefore need to be distinguished.

Another growth indicator comes from Carta’s 2026 report. In Carta’s data, startups with a single founder accounted for around 31% in 2024 and around 36% in 2025, an increase of five percentage points. A sole founder may later hire employees, so this figure does not equal the number of people working alone either.

These datasets describe different groups: official US statistics on businesses without paid employees and a sample of companies on Carta’s platform. They give us a reason to explore the possibility of starting alone.

An example from China: experience and AI in one business

A Channel NewsAsia article dated 9 October 2026 describes Chinese entrepreneur Zhang Pengtao, who now runs ACE Studio alone with AI rather than managing his previous seven-person studio. He says some work that used to take three days can now be completed in about three hours.

His background matters just as much: he had 14 years of video production experience before adopting AI. This is one entrepreneur’s account of his experience, not a promise that every new founder will achieve the same time savings.

For me, the lesson is clear: AI can help you put existing experience to greater use. You still need to judge the result, shape a service and create value for the customer.

Your own customers, more flexible work and responsibility

There are many ways to offer your skills as a service. An engineer can help a smaller manufacturer with technical questions. Someone with sales experience can support a company entering a new market. A trainer can turn their knowledge into a workshop. Customers may come through a platform, direct relationships or referrals.

With ride-hailing and delivery platforms, we are more specifically talking about platform work, where payment is often tied to an individual task. Eurofound’s overview describes more flexible working arrangements and access to customers among its opportunities. The actual freedom of choice depends on the platform’s terms and on demand.

As a business owner, you also have to deal with competition, developing your skills and finding the next job. Finding customers, preparing proposals and administration take time even when nobody pays for them separately. Your pricing and working arrangements also need to allow for holidays, illness and quieter months.

My strength is a systematic approach

This is where my engineering background and sales experience come together. I want to understand how the individual parts work as a whole: where a customer enquiry comes from, where it is recorded, when a proposal is prepared and how completed work eventually becomes an invoice.

While building Nordheim, I have organised the company’s information and documents, customer processes, website and workflows for using AI. I use AI for tasks such as preparing meeting notes, creating summaries, setting tasks and organising the CRM. The point of a systematic approach is to make information easy to find, the next action clear and recurring work consistent.

The same thinking is behind the story of my home loan tool: bring the information together, make missing answers visible and make the next step easier. When launching a business, I apply that logic to the whole way it operates.

Company Launch System: bringing together the parts needed to run a business

Company Launch System is Nordheim’s business launch service. Its initial focus is small service and knowledge businesses where the founder already has a skill or a fairly clear idea and needs to build a company around it.

Within the agreed scope, we help create:

  • The offer and target customer: what the customer buys, who the service is for and how to explain its value.
  • The brand and online presence: a consistent message and visual direction, a website and business email.
  • A system for documents and information: clear file organisation, essential templates and instructions.
  • The customer workflow: the path from an enquiry to a proposal, order, completed work, invoice and the next contact.
  • AI support for everyday work: instructions and roles grounded in the company’s information, helping prepare text, organise information and plan activities.
  • Guidance for continuing: how to use the systems, what the recurring costs are and what needs attention in the future.

You bring your idea, skills and experience. We help you make the choices and build the agreed solution.

We start with a free conversation and a business concept built around your idea. Before building, we agree on the scope, price, external costs and your involvement.

Prompt packs help you start independently

If you want to work through your options yourself first, you can start with Nordheim Business prompt packs. A prompt is an instruction you give to AI, adding your own situation and needs.

Each pack includes 10 structured prompts, 20 follow-up prompts, an example and a practical action sheet. Your purchase includes two PDF files, one in Estonian and one in English. The current price is €4.90 per pack.

AI helps you work through ideas and prepare activities. You need to review its answers for your own situation and test demand with real customers.

If you want to develop your idea independently, choose a suitable prompt pack. If you want us to help build the systems you need to launch your business, write to me. Tell me what you do and who you would like to serve. We can start there.
